Queer pop star Billie Eilish came out almost inadvertently late in 2023 while talking to Variety. Looking back on 2024, Eilish indicated that it hasn't thrown her off her game, saying she's "had a lot of good sex" this year.
Eilish made the comment while reviewing her past annual interviews with Variety, and participating in a new interview with the magazine to cap the year, UK newspaper the Daily Mail reported.
"The 22-year-old singer takes part in the interview every year – since 2017 – answering the same questions eight years in a row," the Mail noted. "One of her goals she hoped to accomplish in 2024 was 'having good sex.'"
As she reviewed that year-old interview, the singer "gave a thumbs up and said 'got there,'" the site added. "And yes, I've had a lot of good sex," Eilish went on to say, "so you're welcome Billie."
As EDGE reported at the time, Eilish's coming out took the form of admitting her attraction toward other women.
"I love them so much," Eilish told Variety in 2023. "I love them as people. I'm attracted to them as people. I'm attracted to them for real ... I'm physically attracted to them. But I'm also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence."
The singer reportedly lost 100,000 followers after the admission, and, after subsequently being quizzed on her coming out by the magazine during a red carpet moment at the Variety Hitmakers Brunch, gave the answer, "I didn't realize people didn't know."
But she then took to Instagram to upbraid the magazine for its focus on her dating life, posting the message "thanks variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters i like boys and girls leave me alone about it please".
Eilish leaned into her newly public queer persona in a collab with Charli XCX last summer. The song, "Guess," teased listeners with its sapphic implications: "Charli likes boys, but she knows I'd hit it," Eilish sang, following that up with, "Charli, call me if you're with it."
Charli XCX then delivered the coup de grace with: "You wanna guess what me and Billie have been texting about. You wanna guess if I'm serious about this song."
Still, by the fall Eilish was sick enough of public discussion of the topic that she vowed she was "never talking about my sexuality ever again."
That didn't stop Eilish from duetting the song live with Charli XCX at a concert this week at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, the Daily Mail noted, detailing how, on Dec. 17, "Billie put on a raunchy display... when Charlie XCX came out on stage to perform their racy song 'Guess' together."
"The pop stars also danced closely together during their performance of the high-energy number."
