Support for Same-Sex Marriage Decreasing, According to New Data

According to new data from a Gallup poll, support for same-sex marriage in the United States is on the decline–especially among Republican voters.

As reported by Newsweek, the data reveals that the majority of Americans still support same-sex marriage, around 69%. Data shows that peak support for same-sex marriage reached 71% in 2022, however support has slightly fallen.

New data shows that though as much as 64% of American's view same-sex marriage as "morally acceptable" but they might not personally agree with the idea.

The Gallup poll shows that 83% of Democrats support same-sex marriage, a minor drop from 87% in 2022.

Support for gay marriage among independents has also declined, falling to 68% in 2023 from 73% in 2021. On the other hand, independents were also one of the only voting groups to see an increase in support among independents in 2023, when it rose to 77%.

Republicans have had the most severe decline in support for gay marriage. Gallup poll data reveals that 49% of Republicans support same-sex marriage, dropping from 56% two years ago.

Gay marriage was legalized nationwide in 2015, but before then several states had legalized gay marriage in some form.

Now with proliferation of anti-trans and anti-gay laws around the country, Gallup poll data could illustrate the beginning of a disturbing new trend.
