Will 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Go Gay? Director Drops Hint at Film's Premiere

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Someone alert One Million Moms! "Guardians of the Galaxy" may be pulling a "Beauty and the Beast."

Will there be a gay protagonist in the popular "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise?

According to Belfast Telegraph, that was gist of an exchange that James Gunn, director of the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" had with a reporter Wednesday at the film's premiere in Hollywood. Gunn was asked by a reporter from Press Association if audiences would ever see a gay protagonist in the franchise.

"We might have already done that," Gunn replied. "I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think."

If "Guardians" does go gay with a major character in superhero franchise, it will follow a trend set last month by the "Power Rangers" movie. And while there was predictable religious right wing backlash to the (very) brief discovery of a sexually fluid female Power Ranger (who may have had girlfriend issues), none of this seemed to hurt the action film's bottom line. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie, which made over $40 million over its opening weekend, has grossed over $81 million to date.

Similarly, Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" box office didn't seem to suffer amid the protests and petitions from religious groups angered over the hint of a "gay moment" in the family audience-targeted movie. The movie broke all box office records before it opened and has grossed over $458 million in one month.

So, which "Guardians" character will be the one with a little sugar in his or her tank? Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel all reprise their roles in the sequel. Place your bets now. The movie is set for a May 5 release.
