A 23-year-old New York man was riding a Brooklyn-bound subway on Thursday, Aug. 26, when he was attacked by a man spouting gay slurs, the New York Post reports.

The suspect reportedly approached and began punching the victim in the head multiple times, according to a New York Police Department report.

"The victim received bruising to his lip and refused medical attention," the Post reports. "The suspect remained on the train and fled in an unknown direction."

The NYPD is investigating the incident as a hate crime, and the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is handling the case.
