Last Wednesday in conjunction with World AIDS Day, German queer activist Riccardo Simonetti posted an Instagram of himself on the cover of Siegessäule Magazin that will likely provoke controversy. He is the European Union's LGBTQ+ goodwill ambassador.

In the photo, Simonetti is "boasting thick facial hair in a white robe, blue head veil and holding a baby doll representing Jesus," Fox News reported.

In a second pic he is seen dressed as the Virgin Mary, with a man in a pink robe embracing him from behind.

"If we ignore the fact that Jesus wasn't white, we could believe the Virgin Mary had a beard, why not?" he captioned his post.

"Feeling very proud and honored to be on the cover of the December issue of such a queer institution as SIEGESSAULE MAGAZIN," Simonetti added. "Special thanks to my friend @akwantu for playing Josef in our newly interpreted holy family photo using the trans Pride flag as inspiration."

"The photos were posted to Simonetti's Instagram page on World AIDS Day (Dec. 1), a worldwide day of awareness for HIV and AIDS prevention and management," Fox added.

In response, a conservative member of the EU is calling for Simonetti to be replaced as goodwill ambassador. "The head of VOX delegation in the European Parliament, Jorge Buxadé, has demanded the immediate dismissal of Riccardo Simonetti, who claims to be an LGTBI ambassador of the European Parliament, after disguising himself as the Virgin Mary in a German magazine and thus offending millions of Catholics in Europe," the Spanish language newspaper La Gaceta reported.

Some on Twitter appeared less than pleased, to say the least.
