When 14-year-old Ulysses's (Luka Kain) father dies, his ultra-conservative Aunt Rose comes to take care of him and his younger sibling after work, as their mother has to take on a second job to make ends meet. The teenager is in the throes of discovering his sexual identity, and when Rose finds out he has been secretly trying on his mother's shoes there is hell to pay.

Salvation comes in the form of an LGBT drop-in center in a church crypt every Saturday night, which Ulysses discovers when he takes the subway to hang around the West Village. There, he finds a tight group of new friends who encourage him to explore who he is -- and one of them actually becomes his love interest.

This compelling coming-of-age drama from openly gay newbie filmmaker Damon Cardasis is also a hybrid musical, with catchy originals songs accompanied by some impressive choreography. Its young star turns in a stunning performance.

SATURDAY CHURCH Opens in theaters, on demand and on all digital platforms on January 12th, 2018
